Admiral Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp (1598-1653) was one of the most famous commanders of the Dutch navy in the 17th century. Born in Briele in the Netherlands, Tromp joined the navy at an early age, following in his father's footsteps. During his career, he took part in several major conflicts, including the Eighty Years' War against Spain and the first Anglo-Dutch wars.

Tromp is best known for his victory at the Battle of Dungeness in 1652, where he inflicted a decisive defeat on the English fleet that enabled the United Provinces to temporarily dominate the world's seas. However, he died the following year at the Battle of Scheveningen, hit by an arquebus shot. His death marked the end of an era for the Dutch navy.

The admiral is represented here after the engraving by Jan Lievens (1607-1674), for which the preparatory drawing, lost since 1888, was presented at TEFAF in 2022. There are several versions of the present composition, showing the admiral with his victorious fleet, including the one in the Rotterdam Museum (inv. no. 63078-A-B) signed ‘M.E. van H.’ and one in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich given to the monogrammist P.K. (inv. no. BHC3061), both commemorating the famous victory of 1652.

L'amiral Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp (1598-1653) fût l'un des plus célèbres commandants de la marine néerlandaise au XVIIe siècle. Né à Briele, aux Pays-Bas, Tromp s'engagea très jeune dans la marine, suivant les traces de son père. Au cours de sa carrière, il participa à plusieurs conflits majeurs, notamment la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans contre l'Espagne et les premières guerres anglo-néerlandaises.

Tromp est surtout connu pour sa victoire à la bataille de Dungeness en 1652, où il infligea une défaite décisive à la flotte anglaise qui permit aux Provinces-Unies de temporairement dominer les mers du globe. Il trouva cependant la mort l'année suivante lors de la bataille de Scheveningen, touché par un tir d'arquebuse. Sa mort marqua la fin d'une ère pour la marine néerlandaise.

L’amiral est ici représenté d’après la gravure de Jan Lievens (1607-1674) dont le dessin préparatoire perdu depuis 1888 fut présenté à la TEFAF en 2022. Notre composition, présentant l’amiral à gauche au-devant de ses faits d’armes, connaît différentes versions : citons entre autres celle conservée au Museum Rotterdam (no. inv. 63078-A-B) signée 'M.E. van H.' et celle du National Maritime Museum de Greenwich donnée au monogrammiste P.K. (no. inv. BHC3061), commémorant la fameuse victoire de 1652.

Le tableau est exécuté sur un panneau de bois de chêne composé d'au moins deux planches jointes horizontalement. Le panneau est parqueté au revers. Le support reste stable.

Le tableau présente bien à la lumière naturelle, les détails du personnage et des bateaux étant globalement bien préservés. Toutefois, les glacis dans les couches de matière supérieures ont subi quelques pertes à certains endroits, notamment dans les drapeaux des bateaux et dans certains détails de l'arrière-plan. Quelques retouches éparses sont viisbles dans le ciel et dans les voiles, qui ont légèrement viré avec le temps. Le vernis semble être encrassé. Le tableau bénéficierait d'un léger nettoyage.

L'examen à la lumière UV est rendu impossible par l'épaisseur et l'opacité du vernis. Toutefois, des traces des retouches mentionnées ci-dessus sont visibles, et il se peut qu'il y ait d'autres campagnes de restauration que nous ne pouvons pas voir. La matière reste stable.

The painting is executed on an oakwood panel made up of at least two horizontally joint boards. The panel is cradled to the reverse. The support remains stable.

The painting presents well in natural light with the details of the figure and the ships overall well preserved. However, there has been some loss to the upper paint glazes in certain areas, notably in the flags on the boats and in some of the details to the background. there is some scattered retouching evident in the sky and in the sails, which has slightly discoloured over time. The varnish appears to carry some dirt. The painting would benefit from a light clean.

Examination under UV light is prohibited by the thick, cloudy varnish. However, there is some evidence of the aforementioned retouching visible, and there may be further campaigns of restoration that we cannot see. The paint remains stable.
