ITALIAN SCHOOL, 1521, CIRCLE OF JAN VAN SCOREL, THE CROSSING THE RED SEA, OIL ON CANVAS, INDISTINCTLY SIGNED (LOWER LEFT, ON THE CARTELLINO)

The artist of this majestic painting demonstrates in his style a knowledge of Venetian painting, notably in the modelling of the horses and the colour palette, as well as of Dutch painting in the caricatural figures of the crowd on the left bank, which show the influence of artists such as Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516). Dated 1521 and executed on a Venetian canvas, we can link the painter of our painting to Jan van Scorel (1495-1562), a Dutch artist who worked in Venice between 1518 and 1522.

The Crossing of the Red Sea is an episode from the story of Moses (Exodus 14:15-31), in which the sea opens up before the Israelites fleeing Pharaoh's army to let them through, only to close again on the Egyptian soldiers. In this painting, the figure of Moses can be seen in the middle, wearing blue and red clothes and wielding a staff. One element of the composition that stands out from the usual iconography of the subject is the group of Israelites in the foreground helping the half-drowned soldiers out of the water. This charitable action is rarely found in depictions of the biblical scene, which was so often chosen as a subject by Western painters.
