A REGILT BRONZE GROUP REPRESENTING 'HEBE AND THE EAGLE OF JUPITER', BY FRANÇOIS RUDE (1784-1855)

In 1846, the city of Dijon commissioned a sculpture from François Rude, a renowned artist, for its Musée des Beaux-Arts. Initially asked to create a copy of the Neapolitan Fisherman with a Shell by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875), he was finally authorised, as he had wished, to create an original work on the theme of Hebe for his home town. François Rude did not manage to finish his composition before his death in 1855. One of his students, Paul Cabet, was chosen to complete his sculpture. Exhibited at the Salon in 1857, it brought him posthumous fame.
