GABRIEL-FRANÇOIS DOYEN, VIRGIN SURROUNDED BY WINGED ANGELS, TRACES OF GRAPHITE, RED CHALK, WATERMARK

This sanguine by Gabriel-François Doyen, close to the graphic style of François Boucher, also recalls, through its abundant energy, the great baroque decors, Roman and Neapolitan, admired by the artist during his stay in Italy. Probably produced between 1787 and 1792, the subject echoes Doyen's lost painting of an Assumption of the Virgin, mentioned in 1793 by Denis Pierre Jean Papillon de la Ferté (1727-1794), intendant of the King's Menus-Plaisirs at the time (M. Sandoz, Gabriel-François Doyen, Paris, 1975, p. 49).
