The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting is executed on an unlined canvas, which is not supported by a stretcher. Traces of historic stretcher bar marks can be seen along each edge, approximately 3 cm into the composition. This area within the stretcher bar marks has been prepared with a ground layer, rendering this area of the composition slightly thicker. The canvas remains stable.
The painting presents well in natural light, with the painterly approach to composition and the texture of the material used fully appreciable. In a raking light, there is a fine pattern of craquelure across the paint surface. In the sitter's upper lip there is a very minor loss associated with this craquelure. There is evidence of a slightly dirty varnish over the painted surface. This is most notable at the lower right hand corner. To the edges of the canvas in the area outside of the aforementioned stretcher bar marks there have been some minor losses to the paint.
Examination under UV light suggests that the painting has been essentially untouched since its original conception. However, the thick, yellow varnish does preclude a more in-depth examination. The paint remains stable overall.

La peinture est exécutée sur une toile non rentoilée et non montée sur un châssis. Les traces des montants de l'ancien châssis sont visibles le long de chaque bord, à environ 3 cm de la composition. La zone située à l'intérieur des marques de châssis a été préparée à l'aide d'une couche de fond, ce qui rend cette zone de la composition légèrement plus épaisse. La toile reste stable.
Le tableau présente bien à la lumière naturelle, l'approche picturale de la composition et les effets de matière étant pleinement appréciables. A la lumière rasante, la surface du tableau présente un léger réseau de craquelures. La lèvre supérieure du modèle présente un très petit manque associé à ce réseau de craquelures. La surface peinte est recouverte d'un vernis légèrement sale. Ceci est particulièrement visible dans le coin inférieur droit. Sur les bords de la toile, dans la zone située en dehors des marques de châssis mentionnées ci-dessus, la peinture a subi quelques pertes mineures.
L'examen à la lumière UV suggère que le tableau n'a pratiquement pas été touché depuis sa conception originale. Toutefois, le vernis jaune épais empêche un examen plus approfondi. Dans l'ensemble, la peinture reste stable.
