GILLIAM DANDOY (ACTIVE ANTWERP 1640-1652), STILL LIFE WITH A WICKER BASKET, A KRAAK DISH WITH A LOBSTER, AND LEMONS, GRAPES, PEACHES AND OTHER FRUITS ON A PARTIALLY DRAPED LEDGE, OIL ON PANEL

The attribution to the Antwerp painter Gilliam Dandoy (active 1640 -1652) was confirmed following a physical examination of the work by Dr. Fred G. Meijer when it was sold at Lempertz in November 2009 (see above). In his dictionary of Dutch and Flemish still-life painters Dandoy is shown to have been listed in the archives of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp as a pupil of Frans Ykens (1601-1693) in 1640, although his compositions are more reminiscent of those of Joris van Son (1623-1667) and Jan Davids. de Heem (1606-1684) (see A. van der Willigen, F. G. Meijer, A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-life Painters Working in Oils, 1525-1725, Leiden, 2003, p. 70).
