GIOVANNI DOMENICO TIEPOLO, SAINT ANTHONY AND THE CHILD WITH PUTTI, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, SIGNED

The iconographic theme of the Franciscan Saint Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) is recurrent in the drawings of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. The sale of the Earl Beauchamp collection in 1965 (see provenance) included no fewer than twenty wash studies of Saint Anthony (lots 19-38). All these compositional studies should be seen in relation to the artist's late altarpiece, Saint Anthony with the Infant Christ, commissioned for the church of San Pascual in the royal seat of Aranjuez and now in the Prado Museum in Madrid (inv. P003007).

Le thème iconographique du franciscain Saint Antoine de Padoue (1195-1231) est récurrent dans l'œuvre dessiné de Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. La vente de la collection du Comte de Beauchamp en 1965 (voir provenance) ne comptait pas moins de vingts études au lavis représentant Saint Antoine (lots 19-38). Toutes ces recherches de composition sont à mettre en relation avec le tableau d'autel tardif de l'artiste, Saint Antoine et l'Enfant Jésus, commandé pour l'église San Pascual au siège royal d'Aranjuez et aujourd'hui conservé au musée du Prado de Madrid (inv. P003007).
