JEAN-BAPTISTE LEPRINCE, MOTHER AND CHILD IN AN INTERIOR, RED CHALK

The composition of this intimate interior scene, in which a mother leans over her child's cradle, is reminiscent of a watercolour by Jean-Baptiste Leprince in which the enlarged scene also shows the father and a servant. It was painted during his trip to Russia between 1758 and 1764 (Epinal, Musée départemental des Vosges; Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, cat. exp., Metz, Musée d'art et d'histoire, 1988, no. 37, ill). The watercolour was engraved in reverse by Nicholas de Launay. The present drawing is very probably a variant produced in the same years.

La composition de cette scène intimiste d’intérieur où une mère se penche vers le berceau de son enfant rappelle une aquarelle de Jean-Baptiste Leprince où la scène élargie montre également le père et une servante. Elle a été réalisée au cours de son voyage en Russie entre les années 1758-1764 (Epinal, musée départemental des Vosges ; Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, cat. exp., Metz, musée d’art et d’histoire, 1988, n° 37, ill). L’aquarelle a été gravée en sens inverse par Nicholas de Launay. Le présent dessin est très probablement une variante réalisée dans les mêmes années.
