JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (1819-1891), BOATS IN THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, SIGNED AND DATED (LOWER RIGHT)

Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) lived in Rotterdam from 1855 to 1860 after his sojourn in Paris. Rotterdam’s port became a favourite subject with Jongkind, who painted it both by day and by moonlight. His Dutch paintings were popular among the French, and his art dealer Pierre-Firmin Martin (1817-1891), who was based in Paris, sold many of his paintings during this period. Even though his works from Rotterdam suggest that Jongkind enjoyed his time there, he longed to return to the French capital. Martin made this possible by organising a sale of works by Jongkind's friends at Hôtel Drouot on 7 April 1860. The auction raised close to 6,000 francs, which made the painter's move back to Paris possible.

Lot Essay
