A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER TANKARD
MARK OF BALTHASAR LAUCH, LEIPZIG, CIRCA 1680
Tapered with applied openwork decoration, figuring on the spreading foot foliate scrolls centred by a flower, on the body Eliezer and Rebecca and on the cover cherubs playing musical instruments and holding foliate, the cover applied on raised centre with a monogram possibly IRSAIDL below coronet, the handle chased with a fruit festoon, marked on collar: town and maker

This style of cagework decoration seems to be a speciality of Leipzig silversmiths and can be seen on a comparable tankard called ‘Die Süsse Kanne’ by the silversmith Hans Scholler, formerly in the Schloss Weisstropp near Dresden, illustrated in R. Graul (op. cit). Incidentally, this tankard also bears a monogram described as ‘JBALSR’ which is similar to our own, but difficult to decipher, suggesting that they may belong to the same family.
The scene depicted on this tankard is taken from Genesis (24, 15-27). Abraham sends his servant Eliezer to find a mate for Isaac in faraway Mesopotamia. Arriving near the town of Nahor, Eliezer leads his ten camels to a well and is told by God that the first young girl to offer him and his camels water will become Isaac's wife. When Rebekah comes to fetch water and offered it to the old man and his camels, he saw in her the bride he had been looking for.

Ce décor de monture à cage semble être une spécialité des orfèvres de Leipzig et se retrouve notamment sur un tankard comparable appelé "Die Süsse Kanne" par l'orfèvre Hans Scholler anciennement conservé au Schloss Weisstropp près de Dresde illustré dans R. Graul (op. cit). Incidemment, ce tankard porte aussi un monogramme décrit comme ‘JBALSR’ qui s’apparente au nôtre, difficilement déchiffrable, qui laisse penser qu’ils ont appartenu à la même famille.

La scène qui figure sur ce tankard est tiré de la Genèse (24, 15-27). Abraham envoie son serviteur Éliézer trouver une compagne pour Isaac dans la lointaine Mésopotamie. À son arrivée près de la ville de Nachor, Éliézer dirige ses dix chameaux vers un puits. Il obtient de Dieu que la jeune fille qui lui donnera à boire, ainsi qu’à ses chameaux, devienne l’épouse d’Isaac. Alors que Rebecca vient chercher de l'eau et l'offre au vieil homme et à ses chameaux, il voit en elle l’épouse recherchée choisie.
