LOUIS DE BOULLOGNE THE YOUNGER, STUDY OF RIVER GOD, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON GREY PAPER, MONOGRAMED

Part of Louis de Boullogne's repertoire of models, this figure of the River God can be linked to two of the artist's paintings. The man lying on the ground holding an oar appears to be a spectator in the Judgement of Paris in the musée de Beaux-Arts de Dijon (inv. DE 17; M.-C. Villanueva-Puig, S. Kersper, Mythes et Légendes en Occident : Collection du musée du Louvre, cat. exp., Taiwan, musée National du Palais, 2012, no. 70, ill.). The same model is used in the Deification of Aeneas, a painting dated 1696 (Christie's Paris, 22 June 2005, lot 84). Another preparatory drawing for the overall composition of the latter is in the musée du Louvre, where the artist depicts the river figure more loosely, but in the same position as the present study (Deification of Aeneas: Venus brings nectar and ambrosia, musée du Louvre, inv. 24963; H. Guicharnaud, Louis de Boullogne, exhib. cat., Paris, musée du Louvre, 2011, no. 9).

Appartenant au répertoire de modèles de Louis de Boullogne, cette figure du Dieu fleuve peut être mise en rapport avec deux tableaux de l’artiste. L’homme allongé par terre tenant une rame apparaît comme un spectateur du Jugement de Pâris conservé au musée de beaux-arts de Dijon (inv. DE 17 ; M.-C. Villanueva-Puig, S. Kersper, Mythes et Légendes en Occident : Collection du Musée du Louvre, cat. exp., Taiwan, Musée National du Palais, 2012, n° 70, ill.). Le même modèle est repris dans la Déification d’Enée, un tableau daté 1696 (Christie’s Paris, 22 juin 2005, lot 84). Un autre dessin préparatoire à la composition d’ensemble de ce dernier est conservé au musée du Louvre où l’artiste représente la figure de fleuve plus librement, mais dans la même position que la présente étude (Déification d'Enée : Vénus apporte le nectar et l'ambroisie, musée du Louvre, inv. 24963 ; H. Guicharnaud, Louis de Boullogne, cat. exp., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2011, n° 9).
