FURTHER DETAILS
MICHEL CORNEILLE II, ANDROCLES AND THE LION, RED AND WHITE CHALK, ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER

Few drawings are known today by this painter from Orléans, a pupil of Simon Vouet, who was best known for his work on Paris ceilings around 1660, at the time of Michel Dorigny, Eustache Le Sueur and Charles Le Brun. The subject of this sheet may be related to a more finely composed brown wash study by the artist depicting Samson taking honey from the Lion's mouth in a large landscape animated by figures and a town in the background (unknown location ; Hôtel Drouot sale, Paris, 11 June 2021, lot 13).
