MARK OF HANS (JOHANNES) BAIR, AUGSBOURG, 1602-1606
Tapered, chased on the foot with a border of stylised ovolo, the body embossed and chased with scrolls, palmetto, fruit trophies and female masks on matted ground, the cover chased with fruits and scrolls, and centred by double coat-of-arms flanked by initials GD and FR, the handle with female bust, the thumbpiece with bifid mermaid, marked underneath: town, maker and assay; on bezel and collar: later French control mark

The arms could be those of the Rehm, a family of merchants and patricians, active in Augsburg from 1282 until the 18th century.

This tankard is a perfect example of the Augsburg Mannerist style. This style of decoration was made popular by the designers and engravers active in southern Germany, particularly in Augsburg and Nuremberg. Known as Schweifwerk, it replaced the high-relief decorations of the masters of the Ecole de Fontainebleau and seems to have been introduced by the Nuremberg painter Georg Wechter (1526-1586). In 1579, Wechter published his book of ornaments ‘Stück zum verzachnen für die Goldschmied verfertigt’, and his designs were adopted by three specialists of Punzenstiche technique (dotted decoration): Bernard Zan, Jonas Silber and Paul Flindt.This tankard with its scrolls, flower trophy and grotesques was inspired by several drawings, including two tankards, one by Bernhard Zan dated 1581 and another by Paul Flindt dated around 1590, both of which are in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (No 28543 and No E.2679-1910).

Ce tankard illustre parfaitement le style maniériste d’Augsbourg. Ce style de décor fut rendu populaire par les graveurs ornemanistes actifs dans le sud de l’Allemagne surtout à Augsbourg et Nuremberg. Appelé il vient remplacer les décors en haut relief des maîtres de l’Ecole de Fontainebleau et semble avoir été introduit par le peintre de Nuremberg Georg Wechter (1526-1586). En 1579, Wechter publie son livre d’ornements ’ et ses décors sont repris par trois spécialistes du (décor en pointillés): Bernard Zan, Jonas Silber et Paul Flindt.
Ce tankard avec ces cuirs, trophée de fleurs et grotesques s’inspire ainsi de plusieurs dessins donc celui de deux tankards l’un par Bernhard Zan daté 1581 et l’autre par Paul Flindt daté vers 1590 tous deux conservés au Victoria et Albert Museum à Londres (No 28543 et No E.2679-1910).
