A GERMAN SILVER TANKARD
MARK OF DAVID SCHWESTERMÜLLER, AUGSBOURG, 1666-1669
The spreading bombe foot chased with large flowers and leaves repeated on the cover, the body applied with a plaque chased with naiads by a river, one resting on an urn, another carried by a triton, one embracing a satyr, another riding a dolphin, surrounded by bulrushes and water plants, the scrolling handle with auricular style motifs, the hinged cover with water-lily finial on foliate terrace, marked underneath, on body and cover rim: town and maker; assay scrap in cover

The aquatic theme of this tankard with its procession of putti is representative of David Schwestermüller's style and recalls the paintings of Rubens, which were still very popular at the time. The Moscow State Historical Museum holds a group of tankards with a similar theme. For an engraved tankard with a similar iconography, see No 429 in H. Seling, op. cit. 1980, volume II.
