A MARBLE BUST OF THALIA, AFTER THE ANTIQUE, ITALIAN, FIRST HALF 19th CENTURY

This bust is based on a Roman antique model from the 2nd century AD depicting Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, now housed in the Vatican Museums (inv. MV.295). The original work, unearthed in 1774 in the area of the so-called Villa of Cassius, had been restored and recomposed through the addition of a head taken from another figure. The present bust, therefore executed after 1775, belongs to a production of the late 18th or early 19th century and illustrates the modern reinterpretation and dissemination of hybrid models from Antiquity.

Lot Essay
