AFTER PIETRO BELLOTTI, PARCA LACHESIS, OIL ON CANVAS

This composition is a reprise of a celebrated painting by the Lombard artist Pietro Bellotti (c.1625-1700). The painter, fascinated by the physiognomies of wrinkled old men and women, had executed several canvases placing emphasis on the marked expressions of his models. A head of an elderly veiled woman (Ca' Rezzonico, Venice) or an old lady warming her hands by a brazier (Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna, inv. 137) bear witness to this. In this composition, for which the prime was executed in 1645 (Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, inv. 284), Bellotti chose to have his model embody one of the Moirai (Fates) of Antiquity. These three divinities, mistresses of the destiny of all beings, spin the thread of life: one weaving it, another unspooling it, and the last cutting it. The Moirai would become the Parcae in Roman mythology, and the Parca Lachesis, depicted here, is the one who unspooled the thread of life. The choice to make her an elderly woman dressed in contemporary attire, who had been winding and spinning for years, was a fitting symbol of the enduring relevance of antique representations.

Cette composition est une reprise d’une célèbre peinture de l’artiste lombard Pietro Bellotti (vers 1625-1700). Le peintre, fasciné par les physionomies de vieillards ridés, avait réalisé plusieurs toiles insistant sur les expressions marquées de ses modèles. Une tête de femme âgée au voile (Ca' Rezzonico, Venise) ou se réchauffant les mains près d’un brasero (Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologne, inv. 137) en témoignaient. Dans cette composition, dont l’originale a été réalisée en 1645 (Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, inv. 284), Bellotti avait choisi d’offrir à cette vieille dame d’incarner une des Moires de l’Antiquité. Ces trois divinités, maîtresses de la destinée des êtres, tissent le fil de la vie pour l’une, le déroulent pour une autre, et enfin le coupent pour la dernière. Les Moires deviendront les Parques en mythologie romaine et la Parque Lachesis, représentée ici, est celle qui déroulait le fil de la vie. L’incarner dans une vieille dame aux habits contemporains du peintre dévidant et filant depuis des années symbolisait bien la pérennité des représentations antiques.
