The label affixed to the reverse of this painting by the Junta de Incautación del Tesoro Artístico gives the name of José Lázaro Galdiano (1862-1947), a leading figure in Madrilenian collecting in the first half of the 20th century. A bibliophile and native of Beire, in Navarre, he settled in Madrid as early as 1888 to found his publishing house, La España Moderna. Alongside his career as a publisher, he assembled an important collection spanning the fields of fine arts, decorative arts, book collecting and numismatics over a period ranging from Prehistory to the 19th century, with a strong emphasis on art from the Iberian Peninsula, while also incorporating works from the great European artistic centres, such as Limoges, Flanders, England and Italy.

In 1936, when the Spanish Civil War broke out, Lázaro Galdiano took up residence in Paris, then, as the Germans advanced, made his way to the United States and settled in New York. His Madrilenian collection, stored in the Parque Florido Palace he had built for himself in the Spanish capital, was seized by the Junta de Incautación del Tesoro Artístico on 24 September 1936 and placed on deposit at the Prado Museum. At the end of the Spanish Civil War, Lázaro Galdiano returned to Spain, undertook the necessary procedures to recover his possessions, and in the process sold a certain number of works of art from his collection, including the present painting. Upon his death, Lázaro Galdiano bequeathed his entire collection to the Spanish State. It has since been presented to the public in the Parque Florido Palace, today known as the Museo Lázaro Galdiano.

L'étiquette collée au revers du parquetage de ce tableau par la Junta de Incautación del Tesoro Artístico nous met sur les traces de José Lázaro Galdiano (1862-1947), figure du collectionnisme madrilène de la première moitié du XXe siècle.

Bibliophile, le natif de Beire, en Navarre, s'installa à Madrid dès 1888 pour y fonder sa maison d'édition, La España Moderna. Parallèlement à son métier d'éditeur, il constitua une importante collection couvrant les champs des beaux-arts, des arts décoratifs, de la bibliophilie et de la numismatique sur une période allant de la Préhistoire au XIXe siècle, avec un ancrage fort dans l'art de la péninsule ibérique, tout en intégrant des œuvres issues des grands foyers artistiques européens – Limoges, les Flandres, l'Angleterre et l'Italie.

En 1936, lorsqu'éclata la guerre civile espagnole, Lázaro Galdiano fixa sa résidence à Paris, puis, à l'approche des Allemands, se rendit aux États-Unis et s'installa à New York. Sa collection madrilène, entreposée dans le palais Parque Florido qu'il s'était fait construire dans la capitale espagnole fut saisie par la Junta de Incautación del Tesoro Artístico le 24 septembre 1936 et mise en dépôt au musée du Prado.
