The inscription on the piece of paper held out by the gentleman in the present painting reads ‘Mon oÿe / faict tout’, a play on words that can either be read as ‘my goose does everything’ or ‘money does everything’. This French proverb was obviously a favourite of the Cuyp family. This painting or one of the same subject, was for a long time given to Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp (1612-1652), (see E. Bénézit, 1999, op. cit., p. 156), and it also appears on an almost identical composition by his elder brother, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652), sold at Christie’s New York in 2020 as part of a pair, the pendant depicting a woman holding a rooster (anonymous sale, Christie’s, New York, 20 October 2020, lot 55, $47,500). Further examples of works that use this pun by Jacob are held in the Louvre, Paris (inv. MNR 437), and in the Kadriorg Art Museum (formerly the Art Museum of Estonia), Tallinn. However, in both museum works the man is replaced by a young boy.

Benjamin Cuyp trained under his much elder brother Jacob in their home town of Dordrecht. Jacob had himself been a student of Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651), in whose oeuvre images of men and women holding fowl and baskets of eggs frequently appear (see, for example, Abraham's An old man with a chicken in The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, inv. ГЭ-9807). Such works often carried sexual connotations, with the Dutch verb vogelen (literally, 'to bird') meaning both to hunt birds and to copulate.

L’inscription sur le morceau de papier tendu par le gentilhomme dans le présent tableau porte les mots 'Mon oÿe / faict tout', un jeu de mots pouvant se lire soit comme 'mon oie fait tout', soit comme 'la monnaie (l'argent) fait tout'. Ce proverbe français était manifestement très apprécié de la famille Cuyp. Ce tableau, ou une autre version du même sujet, fut longtemps attribué à Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp (1612-1652) (voir E. Bénézit, 1999, op. cit., p. 156), mais il figure également dans une composition presque identique de son frère aîné, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652), vendue chez Christie's à New York en 2020 comme faisant partie d’une paire, le pendant représentant une femme tenant un coq (vente anonyme, Christie’s, New York, 20 octobre 2020, lot 55, 47,500$). D’autres exemples d’œuvres utilisant ce calembour par Jacob sont conservés au Musée du Louvre (inv. MNR 437), ainsi qu’au Kadriorg Art Museum (anciennement musée d’Art d’Estonie), à Tallinn. Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp fut formé par son frère aîné Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp dans leur ville natale de Dordrecht.
