Le tableau est exécuté sur un papier ayant été contrecollé sur une toile. La toile est correctement maintenue sous tension sur un châssis à clés. Le papier recouvrant la bande de cloutage est partiellement arraché au niveau des bords inférieurs gauche et droit.
A l'oeil nu, le tableau a préservé le côté esquissé et la touche spontanée de l'artiste. De jolis empâtements blancs sont visibles sur la tête du cheval.
On constate une déchirure dans le papier à droite de l'encolure du cheval. Des manques de matière sont visibles dans la partie supérieure gauche.
L'examen à l'UV révèle des retouches ponctuelles réparties sur l'ensemble du fond noir et des restaurations le long des bords gauche, droit et supérieur. Le tableau se présente sous un vernis épais qui empêche de distinguer de précédentes campagnes de restauration.

The painting is executed on paper that has been mounted onto canvas. The canvas is held under correct tension on a keyed stretcher. The paper covering the tacking margin is partially torn away at the lower left and right edges.
In natural light, the painting presents well, with the artist's spontaneous touch well preserved. Fine white impasto is visible on the horse's head. A tear in the paper is visible to the right of the horse's neck. Areas of paint loss are visible in the upper left section.
Examination under UV reveals scattered retouching distributed across the entire black background and restorations along the left, right and upper edges. The painting is presented under a thick varnish which prevents the identification of earlier restoration campaigns.
