The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note that some uncertainty remains regarding the function of the object; based on the construction of its upper section, it appears to be an inkwell.
There are rubbed areas, surface scratches, and chips consistent with age and handling.
Dust.
The removable element intended to contain the ink is missing from the upper section.
The upper hexagonal section (with the mascarons) is poorly secured and slightly wobbly.
The heads of the herm figures are carved separately; one head is a later replacement.
Gilded elements: rubbed areas and tarnishing.
Silver mounts: tarnished and slightly warped.
Glass panels: the painted background is flaking in some areas. One glass element is broken.
Some inlaid elements are missing.
One foot has been replaced, another has been reattached with a screw and the two other are glued.
Minor loss to the under side, close to the restored foot.
A fragmentary label is present beneath the base.
