101 x 76 cm.).
English
The painting is executed on a prepared panel; to the reverse it is supported by eleven joints. The support and the paint surface remain stable.
Examination in natural light historic restoration can be seen in the background, notably in the blues and in Balthasar’s boots, which have degraded overtime. There have been some losses to the upper paint glazes, resulting in the loss of some small detail, for instance the chain around Melchior’s neck.
Examination under UV light reveals recent restoration the length of a panel join down the centre of the composition and infill in the craquelure. There is more extensive restoration in the Virgin’s red cloak, with an area measuring approximately 18cm. in height, 13 cm. in from the right-hand edge. There is further scattered retouching in the costumes and the faces. The painting has been selectively cleaned, notably in the faces of the Virgin and Melchior, in Melchior’s clothing and the whites of Balthasar’s clothing.
In a giltwood reproduction frame (approx. 101 x 76 cm.).
