ENGLISH SCHOOL CIRCA 1800, CIRCLE OF THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH, PEASANTS AND THEIR HERD IN A LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVAS

This painting, which once belonged to the great collector of Impressionist art, Jules Strauss (1861-1943), in whose collection were works such as The Meadow by Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) and Riders by Edgar Degas (1834-1917), now both in the National Gallery, Washington (inv. nos. 1970.17.83 and 2014.18.7), was for a long time believed to be the work of Gainsborough Dupont (1754-1797), nephew of Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (1727-1788). Profoundly influence by his uncle's style, Gainsborough Dupont painted portraits and landscapes that retained the magical lightness of touch of Gainsborough himself.
