FLEMISH SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, CIRCLE OF JOACHIM BEUCKELAER, KITCHEN INTERIOR, OIL ON PANEL

Joachim Beuckelaer (c.1533-1574) specialised in market and kitchen scenes in which fruit, vegetables, game and other household goods are piled up and intermingled on stalls and in baskets. He was trained in the still life genre by his uncle and master, Pieter Aertsen (1508-1575). Beuckelaer helped to further develop the still life genre in his native Antwerp, and his influence was also felt in the rest of Europe, such as in the work of Italian painters such as Vincenzo Campi (1536-1591) and Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592).
