FLEMISH SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, CIRCLE OF ANTHONY VAN DYCK, EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF ARCHDUKE FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA, OIL ON CANVAS

The artist of this portrait has taken his inspiration from two great Baroque works, notably the Equestrian Portrait of Thomas, Prince of Carignano, by Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), now in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, from which the horse and landscape are borrowed, and the Portrait of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), now in the Ringling Museum, Sarasota FL (inv. no. SN626), from which the sitter's head is taken.

L’artiste de ce portrait s’inspire de deux grands tableaux baroques, notamment le Portrait équestre du prince Thomas de Savoie-Carignan d’Antoine van Dyck (1599-1641), actuellement conservé à la Galerie Sabauda de Turin, d’où il tient le cheval et le paysage, et le Portrait de l'archiduc Ferdinand d'Autriche de Pierre Paul Rubens (1577-1640), actuellement conservé au Ringling Museum, Sarasota FL (no. inv. SN626), d’où vient la tête du modèle.
