HANS ROTTENHAMMER, VIRGIN AND CHILD, OIL ON COPPER

The Bavarian painter Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625) trained in Munich under Hans Donauer (c.1569-1644). After a brief stay in Treviso, he settled in Venice in 1591, where he became a member of the Painter's Guild. He specialised in very detailed cabinet painting of mythological and religious subjects often executed on copper. These were sometimes destined for inclusion in important pieces of furniture. In 1606 he returned to Germany, where he worked in both Augsburg and Munich.

Peintre bavarois formé à Munich auprès de Hans Donauer (vers 1569-1644), Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625) s’installe à Venise en 1591 après un bref passage par Trévise. Membre de la corporation des peintres de la ville, il s’y spécialise dans la peinture de compositions mythologiques et religieuses sur cuivre très détaillées, certaines d’entre elles étant destinées à être insérées dans des pièces de mobilier. En 1606 il retoune en Allemagne, où il travaille à Augsburg et à Munich.
