JEAN-BAPTISTE REGNAULT, THE DEATH OF ADONIS, OIL ON PANEL

This delicate sketch by Regnault (1754-1829) illustrates the passage from Ovid's Metamorphoses, when Venus discovers her handsome lover mortally wounded by a boar. 'When, from high up in the sky, she saw him / lying dead, body soaked in his own blood, / she jumped down, tore her clothing and her hair, / and with frantic hands pounded on her breast’ (see Ovid, The Metamorphoses, Book X, Paris, 1816, [718]). The goddess's tears at the sudden death of her lover were transformed into an anemone, visible here under the hunter's hair.

The present composition is one of the painter's sketches for his large painting presented at the Salon of 1814 and now lost. There are two other sketches for the work, one on paper (Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. RF1972-3) and the other on panel (see Ciechanowiecki sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 28 June 2002, (Mes Beaussant Lefèvre), lot 137).
