Marin Le Bourgeoys (c.1550-1634) was a very interesting character. As an artist, creator of luxury items, clock-maker, and arms-maker he was the epitome of the educated Renaissance humanist, who flourished in cultivated circles. along with his brothers, he is credited with inventing the flintlock, revolutionising firearms technology for almost two hundred years. These talents won him the favour of the spirited, not to say bellicose sovereign, Henry IV (1553-1610).

The King also appreciated his talents as a painter and his ability to depict battles and capture all his soldierly qualities. An equestrian portrait of the first Bourbon king (Henri IV devant le siège d'une ville, Musée de l'armée - Invalides, Paris, inv. no. 2010.26.1), whose similarities in composition, pose and manner allow us to attribute the present portrait to the artist.

A mention in Vladimir Nestorov's research dissertation refers to a series of paintings by Le Bourgeoys having been given to the de Montespan family and brought to the Château de Clagny (see V. Nestorov, Nicolas Baullery (c. 1560 - 1630), enquête sur un peintre parisien à l'aube du Grand Siècle, research dissertation under the direction of Olivier Bonfait, Ecole du Louvre, 2014, p. 100).

The inscriptions on our portrait (although certainly a later addition) identify our model as the marquis de Montespan (1562-1624). The marquis, a battle companion of King Henri IV, could have been rewarded with a portrait bearing his likeness after his loyal participation in the siege of Amiens and the Savoy War, to name but a few.

Quel curieux personnage fut Marin Le Bourgeoys (vers1550-1634) ! Artiste, inventeur d’objets luxueux, horloger, facteur d’armes, il semblait incarner le savant humaniste que la Renaissance produisait au sein des milieux cultivés. On lui confère (avec ses frères) l’invention de la platine à silex, révolutionnant la technique des armes à feu pour près de deux cents ans. Ces talents originaux lui attirèrent les grâces d’un souverain non moins sémillant (tout autant que belliqueux) Henri IV (1553-1610).

Le Roi fut aussi séduit par ses talents de peintre et son habileté à rendre avec attention les batailles comme les attributs guerriers qu’il arborait. On connaît un portrait équestre du premier roi Bourbon (Henri IV devant le siège d’une ville, musée de l’armée - Invalides, Paris, no. inv. 2010.26.1) dont les similarités de composition, pose et manière permettent d’attribuer notre présent portrait à l’artiste.

Une mention dans le mémoire de recherches de Vladimir Nestorov fait référence à une série de peintures peintes par Le Bourgeoys ayant été donnée à la famille de Montespan et amenée au château de Clagny (voir V. Nestorov, Nicolas Baullery (vers 1560 - 1630), enquête sur un peintre parisien à l’aube du Grand Siècle, mémoire de recherche sous la direction d’Olivier Bonfait, école du Louvre, 2014, p. 100).

Les inscriptions sur notre portrait (bien que certainement apocryphes) identifient notre modèle au marquis de Montespan (1562-1624). Le marquis, compagnon de batailles, tout comme de victoires, du roi Henri IV aurait en effet pu se voir récompensé d’un portrait à son éffigie, après ses fidèles participations au siège d’Amiens ou à la guerre de Savoie, pour n’en citer que quelques unes.

Le tableau a fait l’objet d’un rentoilage ancien, correctement réalisé. Il est sur un châssis rapporté à clés.

A l’œil nu, le tableau est fortement encrassé et sous un vernis jauni. On constate des repeints le long des quatre bords correspondant probablement à des restaurations d’usures dues aux frottement d’un cadre. Le tableau a quelques manques répartis dans la partie inférieure (principalement à l’endroit d’anciens repeints), à droite de la croupe du cheval et le long du bord gauche, au centre. On constate d’anciens repeints dans les fonds et au niveau du sol. Le vernis est sec, craquelé avec des traces de matifications.

L’examen à la lampe UV révèle différentes campagnes de restaurations (dans les fonds et le ciel). Le personnage et le cheval n’ont pas fait l’objet de restaurations récentes. Sous un vernis épais, encrassé.

Dans un cadre moderne en bois mouluré noir et doré (85 x 76 x 9 cm.).

The painting has been relined; it is held under tension on a keyed stretcher, and remains stable.
The painting has an old, slightly yellowed varnish that carries some surface dirt and has a fine pattern of craquelure. In natural light, restoration associated with previous frame abrasion can be seen to the four edges of the canvas. Some losses are visible in the lower part of the painting, notably to the right of the horse's rear, in the centre and along the left-hand edge, mainly corresponding with old restorations. There is some scattered retouching to the background.
Examination under UV light reveals several restoration campaigns (notably in the background and in the sky). The sitter and the horse have not been recently restored.
In a modern frame (approximately 85 x 76 cm.).
