Le tableau a fait l’objet d’un rentoilage ancien, correctement réalisé. Il est sur un châssis rapporté à clés.

A l’œil nu, le tableau est fortement encrassé et sous un vernis jauni. On constate des repeints le long des quatre bords correspondant probablement à des restaurations d’usures dues aux frottement d’un cadre. Le tableau a quelques manques répartis dans la partie inférieure (principalement à l’endroit d’anciens repeints), à droite de la croupe du cheval et le long du bord gauche, au centre. On constate d’anciens repeints dans les fonds et au niveau du sol. Le vernis est sec, craquelé avec des traces de matifications.

L’examen à la lampe UV révèle différentes campagnes de restaurations (dans les fonds et le ciel). Le personnage et le cheval n’ont pas fait l’objet de restaurations récentes. Sous un vernis épais, encrassé.

Dans un cadre moderne en bois mouluré noir et doré (85 x 76 x 9 cm.).

The painting has been relined; it is held under tension on a keyed stretcher, and remains stable.
The painting has an old, slightly yellowed varnish that carries some surface dirt and has a fine pattern of craquelure. In natural light, restoration associated with previous frame abrasion can be seen to the four edges of the canvas. Some losses are visible in the lower part of the painting, notably to the right of the horse's rear, in the centre and along the left-hand edge, mainly corresponding with old restorations. There is some scattered retouching to the background.
Examination under UV light reveals several restoration campaigns (notably in the background and in the sky). The sitter and the horse have not been recently restored.
In a modern frame (approximately 85 x 76 cm.).
