NICOLAS BERTIN, THE RESURRECTION, OIL ON PANEL

Although the palette of pastel pink tones and Christ's flowing locks set against delicate golds is enough to indicate the author of the present painting as the academician Nicolas Bertin (1667-1736), the attribution is confirmed by the existence of the final, signed version, in the church of Saint Gilda in Auray (Brittany, Morbihan), (see T. Lefrançois, Nicolas Bertin (1667-1736), Paris, 1981, p. 116).This large altar piece, which was extremely damaged for a long time and was later enlarged and varnished, has recently been restored. This welcome restoration allows a better comparison with the present sketch, as well as with another preparatory composition in the Musée Carnavalet (inv. no. P1940).There are some notable differences between the latter two. The Carnavalet version shows Christ holding a cross (absent here) and he is a less towering figure in comparison to the surprised soldiers. Seated against the tomb, the soldiers in the Carnavalet version are closer to the final Saint Gilda composition. However, other elements of the Saint Gilda version are more similar to our sketch, making it impossible to establish a definite chronology between the two compositions.
