Le tableau est peint sur un panneau de bois aminci ayant été parqueté, renforcé par une baguette le long des quatre bords. On constate des fentes horizontales, notamment une fente de 8 cm. à approx. 8 cm. du bord supérieur, partant du bord droit, ainsi qu'au moins quatre départs de fentes partant du bord gauche d'environ 7-8 cm. de long, et deux traces de fentes à approx. 8 et 7 cm. du bord supérieur. Le support est stable.

A l'œil nu, on constate d'anciennes retouches ayant viré dans les fonds, dans la partie brune, dans le drapé rouge et dans le ruban bleu. Le tableau est sous un vernis épais.

A l'UV, on constate des restaurations le long des fentes, des restaurations dans le bord gauche du verre, le crâne, les feuilles au-dessus du crâne, certaines feuilles au premier plan et des restaurations un peu plus débordantes dans le drapé rouge. Sous un vernis épais masquant des campagnes de restauration antérieures, avec des traces de vernis plus ancien dans les éléments d'orfèvrerie et dans certaines feuilles et prunes.

Dans un cadre en bois mouluré avec un cartouche 'Petrus Willebeeck / ca. 1632-1647' (approx. 66 x 80 cm.).

The painting is executed on panel, which has been thinned and cradled. Supporting battens have been added to each edge. A number of horizontal cracks can be seen, notably one measuring 8 cm. extending from the right-hand edge 8cm. from the upper edge. There are at least four further cracks of a similar length that extend from the left-hand edge at the same level, as well as two much more minor cracks in the same area. The whole remains stable.

In natural light some historic discoloured retouching can be seen in the background, the browns, the red drapery and the blue ribbon. There is a very thick varnish.

Examination under UV light reveals restoration to the aforementioned cracks, and some scattered retouching to the left-hand edge of the vase, the skull, the leaves above the skull and some of the leaves in the foreground. There is more extensive retouching in the red drapery. The thick varnish masks older restoration campaigns, and there are additional traces of an older varnish in the metalwork and in certain leaves and plums.

In a carved wooden frame, with a cartouche bearing the artist’s name (approx. 66 x 80 cm.).
