This composition derives from the painting by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (inv. 776C). Rubens's original was once in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1614-1662), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, and the present small-scale copy may have been one of several hundred such replicas of works in the Archduke's collection made by David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). These were engraved and published in 1660 at the Archduke's behest, resulting in the famous Theatrum Pictorium (or Theater of Painting), one of the earliest extant catalogues of a significant art collection.

Il convient de rapporter cette composition au tableau de Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) aujourd’hui conservé à la Gemäldegalerie de Berlin (inv. 776C). L’original de Rubens faisait autrefois partie de la collection de l’archiduc Léopold Guillaume d’Autriche (1614-1662), gouverneur des Pays-Bas espagnols. La présente copie, de format plus petit, pourrait être l’une des centaines de répliques d’œuvres de la collection de l’archiduc réalisées par David Teniers le Jeune (1610-1690). Ces œuvres furent gravées et publiées en 1660 à la demande de l’archiduc, donnant naissance au célèbre Theatrum Pictorium (ou Théâtre de la peinture), considéré comme l'un des premiers catalogues de collection particulière.
