FURTHER DETAILS
FLEMISH SCHOOL CIRCA 1570, PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, THREE-QUARTER-LENGTH, OIL ON PANEL, CIRCULAR, UNFRAMED

Often mistaken for decorated lids given as gifts because of their finely worked backs, the present small tondo is in fact simply a Flemish panel whose polished reverse is explained by the method used by 16th-century panel makers, who turned the wood to obtain a perfect circle. A similar type of reverse can be seen on an anonymous portrait that appeared on the Paris art market in 2020 (Christie’s, Paris, July 15, 2020, lot 61).

Lot Essay
