GURDON TRUMBULL (1841-1903), TROUT FISHING, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED

Gurdon Trumbull (1841-1903) was one of those captivating New World painters who, at the end of the 19th century, succeeded in infusing Western painting with a realist American. Born in Connecticut, he studied in Hartford and earned a reputation that extended beyond his home state, notably by exhibiting works such as Over the Falls and Plunge for Life at Senedecor’s Gallery in New York.

In 1874, during the exhibition of his works at the New York gallery, an admiring critic from the New York Sun used words to describe one of the artist’s paintings that could equally apply to our lively image of a trout: 'Seen from a distance, his fish appear alive and in motion, full of realism, while, when approached and examined—even with the aid of a magnifying glass - they are found to be rendered with minute precision, down to the texture of the skin and the arrangement of the scales.' (C. Erskine Clement, Artists of the 19th Century and Their Works, Boston, 1879, p. 303.)

Lot Essay

En 1874, au moment de l’exposition de ses œuvres dans la galerie new-yorkaise, un critique admiratif du New York Sun applique à une œuvre de l’artiste représentant un poisson des termes que l’on pourrait reprendre pour notre frétillante image de truite : ‘Viewed at distance, his fish are living and moving, full of reality, while, as they are approached and examined, even with the aid of a glass, they are found to be minutely accurate in the rendering of even the texture of skin and the arrangement of scale.’
