Le tableau a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage. Il est sur un châssis rapporté, à clefs.
Le tableau possède une jolie matière à l'oeil nu. Il est sous un vernis ayant jauni. Il possède un réseau de craquelures un peu prononcé dans les parties claires.
L'examen à la lumière UV révèle des restaurations dans la partie supérieure, dans les sombres ainsi que des restaurations un peu plus débordantes sous le crâne, dans le crâne et au-dessus des mains de Jérôme. On constate également une restauration sous le livre couvrant possiblement un ancien mastic.
Sous un vernis épais, uniforme.

The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under correct tension on a keyed stretcher and remains stable.
In natural light the painting presents well, having retained a lovely texture. The varnish has slightly yellowed. There is a fine network of craquelure, most visible in the pale passages. The paint remains stable.
Examination under UV light reveals some retouching in the upper half of the composition, in the darker passages and an area of restoration beneath the skull, in the skull and above the saint's hands. There is also a zone of restoration below the book. Under a thick, uniform varnish.
