A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER MÜNZHUMPEN OR COIN TANKARD

On spreading bombe base chased with auricular masks interspersed with vacant oval reserves repeated on the cover, the body set with twelve thalers dated 1576 to 1626, the base centred by a thaler of Sigismund III Vasa dated 1630, the cover with a religious medal by Jan Buchheim (1623-1683), marked on upper rim: maker and later French control mark (swan)

In 1261, the city of Königsberg, capital of what was called Prussia, introduced a mint for the Deutschen Orden (Teutonic Order), the Duchy of Prussia and the Kingdom of Prussia.This long tradition of coinage made coins a typical decorative motif in Königsberg's silver, with the choice of coins reflecting the complex political situation in Königsberg and conflicts between Poland and Lithuania, Brandeburg and later the Kingdom of Prussia.

The coins set on the body are thalers for the archbishop of Salzburg, Paris von Lodron (1586-1653), and also include Swedish riksdaler for King John III (1537-1592) and Queen Christina (1626-1689), thalers for Maximilian I (1573-1651), Elector of Bavaria, thalers for the municipality of Mansfeld-Bornstedt and thalers for the kingdom of Bohemia under the reign of Rodolphe II (1552-1612).
The religious medal on the cover is by Jan Buchheim (1623-1683), a medallist active in Silesia and established in Breslau. He worked for royal courts but also institutions, burgers and the church.
The thaler set in the base is for Sigismund III Vasa (1566–1632), King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and King of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1587 to 1632, as well as King of Sweden from 1592 to 1599.

La ville de Königsberg introduisit en 1261 un Hôtel des Monnaies qui frappait les pièces pour le Deutschen Orden ( l’Ordre Teutonique), le Duché de Prusse et le Royaume de Prusse. Cette longue tradition monnétaire a fait des pièces de monnaie un motif de décoration typique dans l’orfévrerie de Königsberg qui reflétait la complexité de la situation politique à Königsberg ainsi que les rapports de force entre la Pologne et la Lituanie, le Brandebourg et plus tard la royaume de Prusse.

Les pièces qui ornent ce tankard sont des thalers de l'archevêque de Salzbourg, Paris von Lodron (1586-1653), des riksdaler suédois en usage pendant les règnes de Jean III (1537-1592) et Christine (1626-1689), des thalers en usage pendant le règne de Maximilien I (1573-1651), électeur de Bavière, des thalers émis par le comté de Mansfeld-Bornstedt, et des thalers du royaume de Bohème sous le règne de Rodolphe II (1552-1612).
