A POLYCHROMED EARTHENWARE BUST OF 'THE YOUNG MARS', SARAH BERNHARDT (1844-1923) AND EDMOND LACHENAL (1855-1948)

The encounter between Sarah Bernhardt and Edmond Lachenal represents one of the most significant artistic collaborations of the late 19th century. The celebrated actress, who was also an accomplished sculptor, presented her Mars Enfant in marble at the 1885 Salon of the French Artists, a depiction of the god of war as a child wearing a helmet topped with a chimera. Ten years later, Lachenal reinterpreted the piece in faience, using the full inventiveness of his glaze experiments to enhance the modeling of the form.

Their friendship, fueled by a shared passion for theatre, inspired several tributes from Lachenal to the actress. These include a faience plaque showing Sarah Bernhardt as Doña Sol in Hernani (Salon of 1881, no. 2979), her portrait as Nana Sahib from Jean Richepin (Salon of 1885, no. 2930), and a plate bearing her likeness (Sarah Bernhardt et son époque sale, Drouot, April 23, 1997, lot 210). In 1884, he also created for her an important table service, later exhibited at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. A 1905 article in La Vie Illustrée recalled the mutual admiration and deep connection between the two artists: “He performed for a long time alongside Sarah Bernhardt, who appreciated his artistic talent, his intelligence, and his great heart.” Sarah herself affectionately called the ceramist “my great madman Lachenal.”

Trained under Théodore Deck, Lachenal went on to have a brilliant career as a ceramist, constantly experimenting with new techniques. His use of matte enamel combined with glossy highlights created subtle contrasts. As in this collaboration with Sarah Bernhardt, Lachenal throughout his career produced stoneware and ceramic interpretations of works by leading sculptors of his time, including Rodin, Prosper d’Épinay, and another major woman artist of the turn of the century, Agnès de Frumerie.

Born from Sarah Bernhardt’s imagination and Lachenal’s technical invention, this bust The Young Mars remains one of the most fascinating testaments to this unique artistic alliance of the Belle Époque.

La rencontre entre Sarah Bernhardt et Edmond Lachenal marque l’une des collaborations les plus singulières de la scène artistique de la fin du XIXᵉ siècle. La tragédienne, également sculptrice accomplie, présenta en 1885 au Salon des artistes français son Mars enfant en marbre, figure du dieu de la guerre représenté sous les traits d’un enfant coiffé d’un casque surmonté d’une chimère. Dix ans plus tard, Lachenal en donne une interprétation en faïence exploitant toute l’inventivité de ses recherches sur les glaçures pour en exalter le modelé.

Leur amitié, nourrie de passion commune pour le théâtre, se traduit par plusieurs hommages que Lachenal rend à la tragédienne. Une plaque en faïence figurant Sarah Bernhardt dans le rôle Doña Sol dans Hernani (Salon de 1881, n° 2979), son portrait en Nana Sahib de Jean Richepin (Salon de 1885, n° 2930), ou encore une assiette à son effigie (vente Sarah Bernhardt et son époque, Drouot, 23 avril 1997, lot 210) le démontrent. En 1884, il compose également pour elle un important service de table, présenté à l’Exposition universelle de 1889. Un article La Vie Illustrée de 1905 rappellera la complicité et l’admiration réciproques qui unissaient les deux artistes : 'Il joua longtemps à côté de Sarah Bernhardt, qui apprécia ses dons d’artiste et surtout sa vive intelligence et son grand cœur.' Sarah elle-même surnommait affectueusement le céramiste 'mon grand fou de Lachenal'.

Formé chez Théodore Deck, Lachenal mena une carrière brillante de céramiste, expérimentant sans relâche de nouvelles techniques. Son émail mat, qu’il associait à des rehauts brillants, permettait des jeux subtils de contrastes. Comme pour cette collaboration avec Sarah Bernhardt, Lachenal interpréta tout au long de sa carrière en grès et en céramique les modèles de grands sculpteurs de son temps, tels que Rodin, Prosper d’Épinay et une autre femme artiste majeure du tournant du siècle, Agnès de Frumerie.

Fruit de l’imagination de Sarah Bernhardt et de l’invention technique de Lachenal, ce buste Mars enfant demeure l’un des témoignages les plus fascinants de cette alliance artistique unique de la Belle Époque.
