FURTHER DETAILS
BARTOLOMEO CASTELLI THE YOUNGER CALLED LO SPADINO, STILL LIFE WITH FRUITS, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, ON ITS ORIGINAL STRETCHER

Bartolomeo Castelli the Younger (1696-1738) was born into a family of painters who specialised in still life paintings. He is the son of Giovanni Paolo Castelli (1659-1730), also known as Lo Spadino, and the nephew of Bartolomeo Castelli the Elder (1641-1686).

The corpus of Bartolomeo Castelli the Younger has recently been defined by Gianluca and Ulisse Bocchi, who note the combination of opposite colours on the same fruit greens and purples with reds, for example as a characteristic feature of the painter's oeuvre. The Bocchi's note that the work of Bartolomeo Castelli the Younger is inspired by the sober compositions of Michele Pace del Campidoglio (1625-1669), to which Lo Spadino gave more intensity, thus differentiating himself from the works of Abraham Brueghel (1631-1690/1697) and Christian Berentz (1658-1722), whose production marked his father's production.

We would like to thank Ludovica Trezzani for confirming the attribution of our painting to Bartolomeo Castelli the Younger (1696-1738) on the basis of a photographic examination of the work.

Lot Essay
