Painter and enameller in Limoges, he was probably a son or nephew of Jean II Pénicaud, working with a freer touch than his entourage. In the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, there is a tazza of almost similar dimensions attributed to Jean III Pénicaud depicting Joseph and Potiphar's wife (inv. 822). This tazza has figures with the same elongated bodies and a parcel-gilt grisaille treatment very similar to ours.
