Lot Essay

With her luxuriant gilded hair, the present figure is probably intended to represent Mary Magdalen. In its highly stylised representation, she recalls examples such as the stone figure of Mary Magdalen in the church of Notre Dame at Écouis (illustrated in D. Gaborit-Chopin, L'Art au temps des rois maudits - Philippe le Bel et ses fils 1285-1328, Paris, 1998, no. 54, pp. 106-108) which was executed in the early 14th century although the lot offered here is probably slightly later in date.
