FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, THE REST ON THE HUNT, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, LOSSES

This small, sketch-like painting is executed in the handling characteristic of Boucher's (1703-1770) oil sketches from the 1730s. The composition has long been known through three nearly identical versions of similar dimensions, all of which appear to be autograph. These include a canvas in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris (inv. no. CAM 441.1), a version in a private collection that was exhibited in a Boucher retrospective at Galerie Cailleux in Paris in 1964, and a version sold on June 2 2020, Christie’s, New York lot 42. In 2013, a fourth, slightly larger example was preempted by the Musée du Louvre shortly before its sale at auction in Paris.

After first-hand inspection of the present painting in 2021, Françoise Joulie confirmed the attribution to Boucher. On inspection of a photographic reproduction, Alastair Laing suggested that the attribution could be to François Boucher and Studio. At this early stage in his career, Boucher was himself painting replicas of his pictures, not necessarily – particularly with small ones – with the assistance of his studio; however, the partial presence of a studio hand cannot be completely discounted.

Ce petit tableau, dont la technique se rapproche de l’esquisse, est caractéristique des huiles de Boucher (1703-1770) du début et du milieu des années 1730. Cette composition nous est déjà connue dans l’œuvre du peintre grâce à trois autres versions, presque identiques, qui semblent toutes être autographes. L’une d’entre celles-ci est accrochée au musée Nissim de Camondo à Paris (no. inv. CAM 441.1), alors que les deux autres sont conservées en mains privées. L’une fut exposée lors de la rétrospective sur Boucher organisée par la galerie Cailleux en 1964, et l’autre est passée en vente chez Christie’s à New York le 2 juin 2020, lot 42. En 2013, une quatrième version, aux dimensions légèrement plus importantes, fut achetée par le musée du Louvre peu avant sa mise en en vente aux enchères à Paris.

Sur base d’un examen direct du tableau en 2021, Françoise Joulie a confirmé l’attribution à Boucher. Alastair Laing, sur base d’un examen photographique de l’œuvre, a suggéré une attribution à François Boucher et son atelier. Au début de sa carrière, Boucher pouvait lui-même peindre des répliques de ses tableaux, sans nécessairement faire appel à son atelier, et ce tout particulièrement pour les petits formats. Néanmoins, l’hypothèse d’une éventuelle contribution de l’atelier de l’artiste ne peint être écartée.
