GIOVANNI REDER, PORTRAIT OF A CAT ON A RED CUSHION, OIL ON CANVAS, WITHOUT FRAME

This painting by Giovanni Reder (1693-1760), of whom we know another cat portrait in a Roman public collection (fig. 1), can be related to a certain tradition of animal portraits represented in isolation as official figures. The portrait of the dog of King Philip V of Spain by Jean Ranc (1674-1735) in the early 18th century is a very fine example (see anonymous sale, hôtel Drouot, Paris, (Me Millon), 11 December 2015, lot 145).

Ce tableau de Giovanni Reder (1693-1760), dont nous connaissons un autre portrait de chat dans une collection publique romaine (fig. 1), témoigne d'une certaine tradition de portraits d'animaux représentés isolément comme des figures officielles. Le portrait du chien du roi Philippe V d'Espagne réalisé par Jean Ranc (1674-1735) au début du XVIIIe siècle en est un très bel exemple (voir vente anonyme, hôtel Drouot, Paris, (Me Millon), 11 décembre 2015, lot 145).
