JACOPO AMIGONI, PORTRAIT OF CARLO MARIA MICHELE ANGELO BROSCHI CALLED FARINELLI, OIL ON PAPER LAID DOWN ON CARDBOARD, OVAL

We are grateful to Annalisa Scarpa for confirming the attribution of the portrait to the Venetian painter Jacopo Amigoni (1682-1752) on the basis of a photographic examination of the work and for suggesting that it represents Carlo Maria Michele Angelo Broschi, known as Farinelli (1705-1782), by comparing it with the engraving by Joseph Appo Wagner (1738- 1815) representing Farinelli in 1735 (fig. 1). The Centro Studi Farinelli in Bologna considers a significant number of arguments in favour of identifying the model with Farinelli.
