MASTER OF THE FIESOLE EPIPHANY, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH ST JOHN THE BAPTIST IN A LANDSCAPE, TEMPERA ON PANEL, IN AN INTEGRAL FRAME

The Master of the Epiphany of Fiesole is an anonymous painter active in Florence in the second half of the 15th century, whose identification is based on the research of the American art historian Everett Fahy (E. Fahy, 'Some Early Italian Pictures in the Gambier-Perry Collection', The Burlington Magazine, 1967, CIX, 768, pp. 128-139). He notes the influence of Cosimo Rosselli (1439-1507) and Jacopo del Sellaio (1441-1493) on the work of the anonymous master and suggests that it could be the painter Filippo di Giuliano (1449-1503) who shared Sellaio's workshop.

The Adoration of the Child by the Virgin and St John the Baptist is a regular theme in the master's corpus. Among the various versions, our painting is particularly close to a composition sold by Sotheby's in Milan on 9 June 2009 (lot 12) which presents a similar framing.

Le maître de l'Épiphanie de Fiesole est un peintre anonyme actif à Florence dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle dont l'identification repose sur les recherches de l'historien de l'art américain Everett Fahy (E. Fahy, 'Some Early Italian Pictures in the Gambier-Perry Collection', The Burlington Magazine, 1967, CIX, 768, pp. 128-139). Celui-ci note l'influence de Cosimo Rosselli (1439-1507) et Jacopo del Sellaio (1441-1493) sur l'oeuvre du maître anonyme et avance qu'il pourrait s'agir du peintre Filippo di Giuliano (1449-1503) ayant partagé l'atelier de Sellaio.

Le tableau est peint sur un panneau de bois tendre constitué de différentes planches, non parqueté. On constate une restauration à l’arrière au niveau d’une jointure de différents éléments.

A l’œil nu, on constate la restauration susmentionnée sur la surface peinte au niveau de la fente (voir photo). On constate des restaurations ponctuelles correspondant probablement à des cavités historiques d’insectes xylophages. Le bleu du manteau de la Vierge a été restauré par endroits. Le tableau est sous un vernis un peu épais.

A l’UV, on constate les restaurations susmentionnées le long de la fente verticale. On constate les anciennes restaurations dans le manteau bleu. Le visage de la Madone, du Christ et de saint Jean Baptiste sont dans un bel état de conservation, tout comme le paysage. Sous un vernis vert épais uniforme.

Dans un cadre intégral avec une inscription 'REGINA.CELI.LAETARE' (approx. 120 x 170 cm.).

The painting has been executed on a softwood panel which is uncradled and made of various planks. We can see a restoration at the reverse of the panel, corresponding to the joint of various elements.

To the naked eye, we can see the afore mentioned restoration on the painted side along the split (see picture). We can see some scattered restoration which correspondent to historic cavities due to woodworms. The blue of the Virgin's mantle has been restored in some areas. The painting is under a slightly thick coat of varnish.

Ultraviolet examination reveals the afore mentioned restoration along the vertical split and in the blue parts of the Virgin's mantle. The faces of the Virgin, of the Christ and of St John the Baptist are in good condition, just as the landscape. Under an even surface, thick coat of varnish.

In an integral frame with an inscription 'REGINA.CELI.LAETARE' (approx. 120 x 170 cm.).
