This rectangular plaque, mounted as a pax, is a rare example of late 15th-century production in Limoges. It depicts the Virgin of Pity or Pietà, a scene also known as Lamentation. The dark background of the enamel reveals the inscription 'S MARIA' as well as interesting golden scrolls and the nimbus of St John removing the crown of thorns from Christ and Mary Magdalene drying her tears in her veil. The treatment of the Lamentation also draws parallels with 15th-century Rhineland and Flemish arts.
