SEBASTIAAN VRANCX, ALLEGORY OF JANUARY, OIL ON PANEL, BEARS A SIGNATURE

Sebastiaan Vrancx (1573-1647) was a member of the fencing guild and captain of the guards in his native Antwerp. He made a name for himself in the genre of depictions of skirmishes and scenes of attack and pillage. However, his work was much more extensive: landscapes associated with mythological and religious scenes, city views, representations of banquets and Breugelian genre scenes, as well as allegories of the seasons and months.

In this last category, made popular by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (around 1525/1530-1569) in Flemish painting in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, each month or season is characterised by the evolution of the landscape and the human activities depicted. In the case of the present painting, this is the month of January, for which we know various versions, including those in the Bredius Museum in The Hague (inv. no. 16-1946) and the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest (inv. no. 8242). A brown wash drawing sold at Sotheby's in London on 10 July 2002 (lot 164), with a similar though inverted composition, can also be related to our painting.
