A MARBLE BUST OF CUPID AS HERMES (AMORINO), WORKSHOP OF BERTEL THORVALDSEN (1770–1844), ITALIAN, FIRST HALF OF 19TH CENTURY

This bust of Cupid is emblematic of a the iconographic repertoire of one of the greatest European Neoclassical sculptors, Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844). The figure of Cupid occupies a central place in his oeuvre, appearing in numerous variations, both by his own hand and that of his workshop.

This putto recurs frequently in Thorvaldsen’s work. He is recognizable notably in the emblematic group The Three Graces and Cupid (circa 1820–1823, Copenhagen, Thorvaldsen Museum, inv. A894). The mythological figure is also treated independently, as in Cupid with His Bow (circa 1826), sold at Christie’s in 2015, or Seated Cupid with a Lyre, held in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

Although originally conceived as part of more complex compositions, this motif was also disseminated in the form of standalone busts. A very similar example to the present model, with some slight differences in the execution, is held in the Yale University Art Gallery (inv. 2023.3.1).
