ATTRIBUTED TO HUYBRECHT BEUCKELAER (1535/1539-1605/1610), JESUS IN THE HOUSE OF MARTHA AND MARY, OIL ON PANEL

Taken from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, Jesus in the house of Mary and Martha illustrates an episode from Christ's preaching in Bethany. Welcomed into the home of Martha, who is busy serving him, Jesus is confronted by her jealousy of her sister Mary, who chooses to listen to his teaching rather than help with the various tasks. Far from confronting the two attitudes, Jesus emphasises to Martha how action is not incompatible with listening to the Word of the Lord, which ultimately forms the basis of Christian life. Widely used in Western iconography, this scene is contextualised here in a rich interior combining decorative elements from southern and northern Europe. The attitude of the two sisters is reinforced by Martha's clothes, whose rolled-up sleeves and pose, along with the activity in the background, reflect her hard work. The painting is marked out by its delicacy and precision in the draperies and the subtle touches of colour.
