English
The two paintings are executed on softwood panels, which have subsequently been inlaid into engaged frames, likely during the course of the 19th century. Both panels remain stable. In natural light some slight rubbing to the gold ground can be seen notably at upper right, there has been some associated regilding notably in the saints' costume. It is possible that the blue, green, red and brown passages of the saint's costume were retouched in oil at some point prior to the reframing of the work. Examination under UV light confirms the above observation and reveals further retouching in the saints' clothing especially in that of St Francis. The flesh tones of St. Francis appeared to be slightly better preserved than those of St. Ambrose's.
