ATTRIBUTED TO *** MARSINGER, PORTRAIT OF THE PAINTER JACQUES CUYPER, INSCRIBED, OIL ON CANVAS

In an article of 1990, Drs. Bionda identified the model of this painting, formerly in the collection of Josephus Augustinus Brentano (1753-1821), and put forward a proposal as to the artist (see R. W. A. Bionda, 1990, op. cit. supra).

The sitter is none other than the painter Jacques Cuyper (1761-1808), who was strongly influenced by French Neoclassicism and held many honorary positions in the Dutch artistic milieu of the early 19th Century. This is the only known individual portrait of the artist. He also appears, among other painters of the period, in the painting of Brentano's Gallery of Paintings (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no. SK-A-4122), on the right-hand side of the composition, with his index finger pointing at the easel.

The artist of the portrait remains more mysterious: on the reverse of the stretcher we can read the inscription "Marsinger f Ao 1793". R. W. S. Bionda suggests that this is an Amsterdam painter who is not mentioned in the registers.

Dans un article de 1990, Drs. Bionda identifie le modèle de ce tableau, anciennement dans la collection de Josephus Augustinus Brentano (1753-1821), et avance une proposition quant à son auteur (voir R. W. A. Bionda, 1990, op. cit. supra).

Le modèle n'est autre que le peintre Jacques Cuyper (1761-1808), fortement influencé par le néoclassicisme français, qui a occupé de nombreuses fonctions honorifiques dans le milieu artistique hollandais du début du XIXe siècle. Il s'agit du seul portrait peint connu de l'artiste. Il figure également, parmi d'autres peintres de l'époque, dans le tableau représentant la galerie de tableaux de Brentano (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, no. inv. SK-A-4122), à droite de la composition, son index pointé vers le chevalet.

La main derrière ce portrait comporte quant à elle plus de mystère : au revers du châssis, nous pouvons lire l'inscription "Marsinger f Ao 1793". R. W. S. Bionda avance que le portrait ci-présent est de cet artiste dont les registres amstellodamois ne font pas état.
