A ENAMELLED-GOLD MEDALLION WITH THE PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN PAINTED ON VELLUM, ATTRIBUTED TO RICHARD GIBSON (1615-1690), ENGLISH, SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY

Richard Gibson, also known as ‘Dwarf Gibson’, was a page at the court of King Charles I before showing an aptitude for painting and, in the 1630s, making copies of paintings held in the royal collections.Close to the king and his courtiers, Gibson was appointed Picture Maker by King Charles II in 1672 and, under James II, was drawing master to Princesses Mary and Anne. The originality and delicate treatment of his miniature portraits, which he made his speciality, met with great success with aristocratic clients.
